During our current pandemic thousands of people are also looking for jobs. We thought some job search ideas and tips would be helpful today.
Our friends at AARP have partnered with TopResume in a survey of 334 hiring managers, recruiters, and human resource professionals to learn more about how the pandemic has affected the hiring process.
Employment gaps not so important
Due to Covid-19 the unemployment numbers have skyrocketed. In the survey 87% of the respondents indicate they would not be concerned about the gaps in employment. Of course, that means 13% would be concerned.
Cover letters getting more important
Usually cover letters don’t get read, computer software screening applications won’t normally consider those letters. In the survey, almost half of the recruiters (48%) indicated they would be more likely to read a cover letter than they were before the pandemic.
Remote work may be here to stay
In 2020 most nonessential jobs moved to remote work temporarily. As the effort to vaccinate millions continues, those positions are likely to be working remotely for the first part of 2021. According to a survey from KPMG, as many as 70% of companies may downsize their office space as some employees transition to permanently working from home.
Your next job interview may be on video
In April 2020, 80% of employers began conducting job interviews through videoconferencing according to Gartner Inc. The trend has continued through this year. Brushing up on video interview skills could create a good impression that leads to getting hired.
Saying thanks is a nice touch
Regardless of the method of interviewing, sending a thank-you email to the hiring manager, panel interviewers, and other key people you talked with is the classy thing to do. This one outreach – or lack of one – has become more significant over the past year according to 68% of the recruiters.
