Welcome to National School Breakfast Week (NSBW), March 2 – 6, 2020. Yes, over the years we have alerted you to some unique weeks to celebrate. This time we’re focused on calling your attention to a great service with NSBW. The fact is that over 14 million U.S. kids participate in this program each day.
In 1966 the School Breakfast Program (SBP) was launched as a two-year pilot project. Designed to deliver breakfast to “nutritionally needy” children, the program was extended multiple times and made permanent in 1975 by an act of Congress. SBP plays a significant role in feeding children of food-insecure families.
As part of the legislation making the SBP permanent, Congress declared its intent that the program "be made available in all schools where it is needed to provide adequate nutrition for children in attendance." Moreover, the legislation continued to emphasize participation by schools in severe need and to provide higher reimbursement to these schools.
