2018 Winter Olympic Facts and Figures

More than 76% of Americans watch the Winter Olympics.  And 78% of us have a favorite sport.  Figure skating is the most popular at 35%followed by ice hockey at 16%. 

We have gathered the numbers – some of them stunning – of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.  Enjoy the trivia.

Olympic Costs

Estimated cost of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics - $12.9 Billion.

Proposed cost put forth in the city’s winning bid ($1.5 billion for the actual Games and $2 billion to $6 billion for infrastructure). Estimated cost $3.5 Billion - $9.5 Billion

Cost of 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics was $50 Billion+.

Estimated International Olympic Committee contribution to Pyeongchang 2018 Organizing Committee $880 Million.

Television Coverage

Cameras used by the Olympic Broadcasting Services 450.

High definition coverage of 5,000 hours is provided by OBS.

Number of countries/territories broadcasting coverage 200.

Number of people who will have access to Winter Games television coverage 5 billion.

NBC paid $4.4 Billion for the broadcast rights to the Olympics through 2020.

For the broadcast rights from 2021 to 2032, NBC paid $7.65 Billion.

The 2018 Winter Games generated $900 Million in ad sales for NBC.

During coverage of the Games more than 7.2K+ will air, 31% more than in 2014.

Over 2,400+ hours of coverage from NBC, most-ever for a Winter Olympics.

Another most-ever Winter Olympics coverage is NBC’s 1,800+ hours of live streaming.

Coca-Cola has been a sponsor of the Olympics 22 times, the longest continuous partner of the Olympic games (since 1928).

Olympic Staff

Number of employees at the Games, 51,130.

Members of the “Passion Crew,” 14,647 volunteers are helping the Games run smoothly.

Feeding the Crowd

Projected 5 million meal portions served at 13 competition venues, the Olympic Village, Olympic Plaza, Press Center and other venues. 

Olympic Event Debuts

Four Events making their Winter Olympic debut.

  • Big Air snowboarding -- athletes performing tricks after launching from large jumps
  • Mixed doubles curling-- eight countries will field a team of one man and one woman.
  • Mass-start long-track speedskating– 24 skaters will line up for the final in rows of six.
  • Mixed team alpine skiing– sixteen teams, each to consist of two men and two women, will compete in a knockout format in which two athletes will compete side-by-side down slalom courses.

Olympic Metals

Medals available for men, 147.

Number of medals for women, 132.

Gold Metals weigh 1.29 pounds.  The silver medals weigh 1.28 pounds and the bronze 1.09 pounds.

The front of each medal features the Olympic rings logo and diagonal lines symbolizing discipline and determination; the back features the emblem for the games and the name of each event. The teal-and-red ribbon is a traditional textile embroidered with patterns of the host country.

Athletes

Record 92 countries that will participate.

Six countries making their Winter Olympics debut – Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore.

Total number of athletes competing in the Winter Olympics 2,952.

Women Athletes 43%. Team USA is 44.6% female (109 women).

Total coaches and officials in attendance 3,500+.

U.S. athletes 244; the largest delegation for any nation in the history of the Winter Games. 

Curling was introduced in 1924, this is the first Olympics at which coed teams will compete. And in case you didn’t know, the goal is to get the rocks as close to the center of the circles as possible.
