We have survived Black Friday weekend and no doubt some of those battles in the parking lot over choice spaces. In order to reduce that parking lot scramble, we have some suggestions about your approach to finding that slot for your car.
Of course, we have research on methods for selecting a parking place. Authors Paul Krapivsky of Boston University and Sidney Redner of the Santa Fe Institute looked into where you should park in that crowded parking lot, based on mathematics. The detailed results of the study complete with their mathematical calculations were published in the Journal of Statistical Mechanics.
Based on the researcher’s calculations, the “Prudent” strategy is the best one. Overall, it will cost drivers the least amount of time. The next best strategy is the “Optimistic” one, followed by the “Meek” option.
The research does prove that amazing parking place upfront is probably unlikely; however, so you’ll save yourself some time grabbing that second space you see and walking to the door instead.
Now that we are in the Holiday Shopping mode, the parking situation is a whole different animal. You just might want to grab that first spot you find and get on with your shopping.
Our trusty researchers say you’re by in large likely to find another one; however, close to the door, so it might be in your best interest to hold out hope and drive a little further in before you commit to that far away space.
If the parking lot is full because of a major event, you should just sit around in your car and wait for a spot to open up. Although it may sound more time intensive than driving around or going to a different parking lot, it will typically save you time and energy.
FYI, honking at the driver who is being impossibly slow in vacating that place you’re waiting on is a bad idea and almost certainly going to slow that driver down even more.
