Stunningly, the Olympics begin in less than a week – Friday, August 23, 2021 and run through August 8, 2021. During these Olympics there will be an array of firsts – not all of them from the athletes.
We have sought out some of the more interesting facts about this year’s events and thought you would enjoy the tour.
Everyone is talking about the first-time events this year. They include baseball, 3-on-3 basketball, karate, softball, sport climbing, and surfing. This year’s Games have a total of 33 different events.
Men and women team up in 9 new mixed events including archery, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis, track and field, and triathlon.
The 11,500 athletes at the Tokyo Games are the most gender-balanced Olympics is history – men at 51% and women at 49%. Plus both men’s and women’s events are offered in every sport.
This year’s table tennis competition supports the theory that the Olympics are for atheletes of all ages. Hend Zaza of Syria is 11 years old and is the youngest qualifier in this sport in 50 years. Ni Xia Lian is representing Luxembourg in this sport and is 50 years old.
Spectators will not be attending these Games - a truly stunning statement. Beginning with the ban on international spectators coming to Japan, when Tokyo entered a state of emergency on Monday, July 12 all spectators were banned.
The cost to host the Olympics is never cheap. The initial budget in Tokyo was about $6.8 billion. Estimates now are closer to $20 billion. The title for most expensive Olympic Games ever belongs to Beijing spending at total of $40 billion.
Over 78,000 tons of unwanted electronics like mobile phones and laptops generating 70 pounds of gold, 7,716 tons of silver, and 4,850 tons of bronze. These recycled materials were used to produce 5,000 medals.
Physically the only difference between the gold and silver medals is 6 ounces of gold plating. The bronze medal is an alloy of copper and tin.
