October brings slightly cooler temperatures and the promise of having some fun. It’s a great month for festivals, carnivals, and that perineal favorite, Halloween. October is also a month of interesting celebrations, facts, and history.
October as the name of the eighth month of the year. The Latin for eight is octo. When the Romans converted to a 12-month calendar, they tried to rename the month after various Roman emperors. The name October stuck.
More U.S. presidents have been born in October than any other month.
The first release of National Geographic magazine was in October 1888.
The Panama Canal joined the Atlantic and Pacific oceans on October 10, 1913.
The Hoover Dam began producing electricity on October 9, 1936.
The Statue of Liberty arrived in the U.S. from France in October 1886.
Time Zones of the world were created in October 1884.
Disney World opens in Florida 50 years ago in October 1971.
The world’s population reached 6 billion on October 12, 1999.
The Hunter’s Moon arrives on Wednesday, October 20. This full moon is closely tied to the autumnal equinox. The Hunter’s Moon signals the time to go hunting in preparation for the cold winter ahead.
The Orionids meter showers are named after one of the most recognizable constellations in the sky, Orion. The meteors appear to radiate from Orion and feature some of the brightest and fastest streaking stars. The Orionids reach their peak on October 20 – 21 and will compete with the Hunter’s Moon.
People born in October can be under one of two very different star signs. Before October 23, you are Libra. On October 23 or later, you are Scorpio.
October’s birth flowers are the cosmos and the calendula or marigold. Cosmos is a symbol of joy in life and love and of peace. Calendula/marigold represents winning grace.
The opal is October’s birthstone and represents faithfulness and confidence.
