New Year's Resolutions in a Pandemic

Written by Communications Team | Mon, Jan 04, 2021

Our blog is frequently a result of investigating ideas or concepts that we find interesting. For instance, some of this year’s topics based on our curiosity include Pandemic Buying in Bulk, Running Out of Hurricane Names, Saharan Dust Storms, plus Electronics and Covid-19.

Today the idea of New Year’s Resolutions and whether to make them or not has hit the top of the curiosity list. Based on our research there appears to be two camps on this topic.

The “Take Advantage of the Opportunity” group sees this new year as a place to add those good involuntary changes and some potential additions to our committed list for 2021.

The “Changed Enough” group seems to feel that we have all spent the past 9 months dealing with more than enough challenges and changes that even considering making resolutions requires too much thinking.

Depending on the group you have adopted, we have some ideas and suggestions make your group choice workable.

Take Advantage of the Opportunity

Here are tips on composing those resolutions so they make sense and your focus is clear.

Specific. Discard the “I want to exercise more” for the Rather than saying, “I want to exercise more,” for stating what your intentions with specific measurements. “I want to exercise for 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week.”

Measurable. Your resolutions should be measurable. Keep a record of you progress – could be documenting your trips to the gym, your weight loss, or the number of times you took a walk.

Achievable. When setting your goals, break them down into smaller steps that reduce the time between your commitment and success.

Relevant. Setting a goal because someone else wants you to will not produce the motivation you need to accomplish this goal. Remember, your goal is about your self-improvement.

Time-bound. Just like your goals need to be achievable, they also need to have a practical time frame. If your goal will take a year to complete, be sure to break is down into smaller pieces to boost your motivation.

Changed Enough

Resisting resolutions? We have some thoughts on dealing with the messy middle of this crisis and gaining a sense of control.

What do you want to take with you when this is all over? Take a few minutes to review the positive changes from 2020. Did your connections with your family improve? How did working from home improve your results? What did you learn about managing employees during 2020? Do you want to continue working from home or would you prefer to go back to the office?

Where in your life would you like to step things up? The point is to identify goals that could help you feel better and have more energy at the end of the day. Let’s not add more pressure to a difficult time, rather let’s find where you can to better despite the pandemic.

How can invest in yourself? Can you expand your knowledge with online classes? Do you need to add more physical activities? Will going to bed earlier give you more energy?
