National Fire Prevention Week

The statistics on home fires are stunning.  According to the National Fire Protection Association an estimated 358,500 home fires occur each year.  National Fire Prevention Week us October 6 – 13, 2019 and we want to give you some good information about preventing fires in your home.

Where do those fires start?

50% in the kitchen

7% in the bedroom

6% chimney fires

4% in the living room

3% in the laundry room

Take the Test

Please take a moment to check each of the statements below that is true for your home.  This short exercise can be revealing about how prepared you and your family are in case of an emergency. 

Smoke Alarms

  • On every level of the home.
  • Tested each month.
  • Batteries changed as needed.
  • Are less than 10 years old.
  • People can hear smoke alarms from any room.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

  • Located on each level of the home.
  • Less than 7 years old.

Escape Plan

  • There is a fire escape plan that shows two ways out of every room.
  • Exits are always clear and not blocked with furniture or other items.
  • Everyone knows where the safe meeting place is outside the home.
  • The escape plan works for everyone, including children and older adults.
  • There is a phone near the bed to call a local emergency number in case of a fire.
