Every month of the year groups and organizations are calling our attention to hundreds of causes, ideas, events, and just plain fun. September is a good example of an array of celebrations.
Our friends at National Day Calendar have provided a list of 40 national month events in September. We have selected a representative group that we want to share.
Once indigenous to South America, the potato is a staple food in much of the world. They are even grown on all fifty states of the U.S.
The word “spud” became associated with the potato in New Zealand around 1850 where potato planters used spuds, a sharper version of a spade, to dig up potatoes.
Potato skins are a good source of fiber and potassium. An average potato with the skin intact only contains 110 calories. Clearly, it’s the toppings that add the calories.
Freshen your resume up during September. It’s a good idea to add your latest skills, experience, and achievements to your resume at least once a year.
Lenardo da Vinci wrote one of the first resumes in 1482 when he listed his personal accomplishments on paper. He used this letter so secure employment with the Duke of Milan. A decade later, da Vinci returned to Milan to work for the Duke again, this time to create The Last Supper.
First documented in 16th century England, square dancing was familiar in France and Europe. European immigrants brought the dance with them as they settled in North America.
The most widely known form worldwide is the Western American square dance. In the 20th century the romanticized image of the American cowboy is the probable cause. Strongly associated with America, square dancing is the official state dance of 19 U.S. states.
In the early 1970s, efforts were made for a Congressional resolution for September to be declared as National Square Dancing Month. Apparently, no decision was made.
The National Chicken Council has banded with major chicken producers for over two decades to promote chicken sales in September. Once a slow month for chicken sales as the summer grilling season waned, September is one of the year’s best performing sales periods.
Libraries are a great source of all manner of information. The U.S. Library of Congress houses over 150 million items on 830 miles of shelves as the world’s largest library.
Libraries around the country have made the pivot to providing their services and loaning books online during the pandemic. September is a perfect month to get a library card. You can do that online as well.
In 1987, the American Library Association funded the first Library Card Sign-Up Month.
