Most Frequently Stolen Vehicles - Is Yours on the List?

With thousands of vehicles on the roads today, ever wonder which cars are stolen most often?  The Highway Loss Data Institute has a list of the vehicles that are most likely to be stolen and a corresponding list of those least likely to be stolen.  We found the information interesting and surprising.  The vehicles in this study are all 2016-18 models.

Most Frequently Stolen Vehicles

Models in the top 20 with the highest theft rates were either vehicles with big engines, luxury vehicles, or pickups.  Dodge leads the list with the Charger HEMI and Challenger SRT Hellcat.  Along with the Infinity Q50, the Charger and Challenger have claim rates for whole-vehicle theft of more than 5 times the average for 2016-18 models.

Glaringly absent from the most frequent list is the previous leader of this category, the Cadillac Escalade.  Owners may be benefitting from enhance security features along with the increased competition from the Infinity and Land Rover Large SUV models.

Least Frequently Stolen Vehicles

Topping the least frequently stolen list is the BMW 3 series with only one claim for a whole-vehicle theft 104,901 insured vehicle years.  What’s an insured vehicle year?  One vehicle insured for one year.

The low theft rate for electric vehicles may be due to the fact that they are usually parked in locations close to electrical outlets – garages or close to home.  Two Tesla Models, S and X, are on the least stolen list.
