Let's Rodeo!

Written by Linda Kay | Mon, Mar 06, 2017

The Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo™ (HLSR) is the world’s largest rodeo and last year welcomed more than 2.46 million people to the grounds, and over 1.34 million for the rodeo and concert production inside NRG Stadium.

Living in Houston means going out to the Rodeo in March.  The Rodeo performances start on Tuesday, March 7 and continue through Sunday, March 22.

2017 Education Commitment

Since the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ began in 1932, more than $430 million has been committed to the youth of Texas. The Show has presented nearly 17,000 scholarships since the first scholarship was awarded in 1957.

Currently, more than 2,400 students are on Show scholarships, attending more than 80 different Texas colleges and universities. The value of these scholarships is approximately $47 million.

Grants

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ provides grants to 501(c)(3) charities and accredited institutions of higher education. In keeping with the mission of the Show, all grant applications and awardees must benefit youth, support education, expand agricultural horizons and/or preserve and honor pioneer heritage and culture. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ has presented more than $55 million in grants and research to more than 100 organizations and institutions in Texas.

Volunteers

More than 33,000 people volunteer on over 107 committees to make the HLSR happen each year and are responsible for helping maintain its charitable purpose year after year.  Committee members each donate an average of 67.7 hours of service to the Show every year.  Every single ZIP code in Harris County has committee members living in its neighborhoods.

With more than 2.1 million total hours of dedication amongst them, Show volunteers know that dedication to this organization goes beyond a time commitment — it’s a way of life.  Interested in becoming a volunteer, click here.

What to See

HLSR is a whole lot more than the Rodeo competition in NRG Stadium.  Sure, the entertainers are great and seeing the cowboys ride those truly mean bulls is exciting.  We invite you to explore the livestock competitions, horse shows, carnival, AgVenture area, and so much more.  Check out the Show Schedule for information.
