July is National Ice Cream Month in the U.S.  Since we’ve been sweltering in high 90-degree days with some tripping the 100-degree mark, ice cream is sounding pretty good right now.  Our research has turned up some interesting history and facts about ice cream. 

History

As far back as 200BC, Chinese King Tang of Shang is thought to have had over ninety “ice men” who mixed flour, camphor, and buffalo milk with ice.  Additional royals who enjoyed ice cream include Alexander the Great, who enjoyed eating snow flavored with honey and Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar of Rome was said to have sent people up to the mountains to collect snow and ice.

The first mention of ice cream in America appeared in 1744, when a Scottish colonist visited the house of Maryland Governor Thomas Bladen wrote about the delicious strawberry ice cream he had while dining there. 

In 1843, the hand-cranked churn was patented by Nancy Johnson and is a method still in use today.  Jacob Fussell built the first ice cream factory in Pennsylvania in 1851.  Searching for a method to use his oversupply of milk and cream, Fussell’s factory was very successful.  Mass production cut the cost of ice cream significantly and make it more available to people of lover classes.

• United States is largest producer and consumer of ice cream in the world producing 1/6 billion gallons of ice cream a year.
• 90% of American households eat ice cream.
• 12 gallons of milk can produce only 1 gallon of ice cream.
• The average cow produces enough milk in its lifetime to make 7.5 thousand gallons of ice cream.
• Thanks to President Ronald Reagan, National Ice Cream Day is legit. In 1984, he signed a proclamation that declared July to be National Ice Cream Month.
• The ice cream soda was invented in 1894.
