Hurricane Season 2021

Written by Communications Team | Mon, May 24, 2021

NOAA is predicting another above average hurricane season in 2021. The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30. Named tropical storm Ana jumped the start time last week.

Based on NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the likely range for 2021 includes:

  • 13 to 20 named storms (winds of 30mph or higher)
  • 6 to 10 of the named storms could become hurricanes (winds of 74mph or higher)
  • 3 to 5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5 with winds of 111mph or higher)

Based on a recent NOAA update, an average hurricane season produces 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

Time to Get Ready

Now is a great time to begin your hurricane planning. Ready.gov has some great advice, forms for making your plans, and steps to get ready for hurricane season.

Make an Emergency Plan

Make sure everyone in your household knows and understands your emergency plan. For more information about writing that plan, click here.

Signup for Alerts

Download for the FEMA app and receive alerts from the National Weather Service. For area alerts in your area, click here.

Review Important Documents

Make sure your insurance policies and personal documents are up to date. Make copies and keep them in a secure, password protected digital space.

Gather Supplies

We all remember the rush on toilet paper at the beginning of the pandemic. Let’s not allow that to happen again. While you are gathering supplies for hurricane season, let’s also show some consideration for those around us. Slowly build up supplies in advance.

What do we need to stock? Household – including medications, disinfectants, masks, and pet supplies are a good start. Non-perishable food would be good, too.

Getting Ready
