Houston Super Bowl Trivia

Written by Linda Kay | Mon, Feb 06, 2017

It’s impossible to live in Houston Texas and not get caught up in the Super Bowl frenzy on some level.  Possibly you have chosen to leave the city, rent your house for outrageous prices, or take a trip over the weekend.  On the other side is volunteering for the hoopla, actually attending the game, or tail gating in the middle of the action.

Whichever approach you have taken, we thought that you might enjoy a brief comparison of the 3 Houston Super Bowls.

Super Bowl VIII

Houston’s first Super Bowl was held on January 13, 1974 in Rice Stadium.  The Minnesota Vikings lost to the Miami Dolphins 24 – 7.  Paid attendance was 71,882. The television audience was 56,050,000. The 30 second commercial airtime cost $107,000.00.  Tickets were $15.00.  Charley Pride sang the National Anthem.  Half time performers included Miss Texas, Judy Mallett, backed up by the University Texas Band.

Super Bowl XXXVIII

For Houston’s second Super Bowl we had a great new venue then known as Reliant Stadium.  The game was played on February 1, 2004.  The New England Patriots won the game with the Carolina Panthers 32 – 29 in one of the most exciting contests in the event’s history.  The television audience was 89,800,00 and actual attendance was 71,525.  A 30 second commercial airtime sold for $2.4 million.  Tickets were $400.00.  Beyoncé sang the National Anthem.   The Half Time performance was one of the most memorable with Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction.

Super Bowl LI

For Houston’s third Super Bowl game is today, February 5, 2017.  The contestants are the New England Patriots in their 9th Super Bowl appearance and the Atlanta Falcons in their 2nd trip to the game.  The attendance is expected to be at capacity of 71,975 and the television audience is estimated at over 90 million.  Barbara and George H. W. Bush handled the coin toss.  The cost of a 30 second commercial airtime sold for $5.02 million.  Luke Bryan sang the National Anthem.  Lady Gaga is performing at Half Time.  The price of tickets on the NFL website is $7,249.00 to $12,749.00.  The ticket price includes before and after parties.
