Halloween Safety 2021

Written by Communications Team | Mon, Oct 25, 2021

After last year’s disappointing cancellation, the big question is can we safely have Halloween in 2021? The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director, Rochelle Walensky, indicates that trick-or-treating this year is on.

Naturally, there are some boundaries. Crowded, indoor parties are not recommended. Small outdoor celebrations are preferred. Our research has provided some additional recommendations for having Halloween fun safely.

Costume Safety

  • Purchased costumes should say “flame resistant” on the label.
  • Use flame-resistant fabrics if you make your own costume.
  • Costumes should be bright and reflective. Add strips of reflective tape to be more visible.
  • The costume should fit and not long enough to cause tripping.
  • Avoid oversized shoes and high heels.
  • Pointed props like swords, wands, and knives might pose safety hazards.
  • Ditch the mask that came with the costume. Most don’t allow the kids to see well.
  • Decorate a regular Covid mask or use face paints. (Be sure to test the paint for skin irritation before Halloween.)

Kids on the Prowl

  • A responsible adult should accompany younger children on neighborhood rounds.
  • Instruct kids to travel only in familiar, well-let areas and stick with their friends.
  • Teach your children never to enter a stranger’s house or car.
  • Reminder – children and adults need to put electronic devices down, keep heads up, and walk – not run – across the street.

On the Home Front

  • Before Halloween check out your sidewalks and paths for tripping hazards – garden hoses, toys, and bikes.
  • Turn the outdoor lights on and replace burned-out bulbs.
  • Control your pets. Possibly Fido or Fifi should be contained in another part of the house.

Handing Over the Candy

  • Put the candy in the kid’s bag rather than allowing all of them to reach into your bowl of candy.
  • Package the candy in small bags and stage them on a table. Each child can pick up their own bag. Of course, this plan needs to be supervised.
  • Kids should be instructed not to handle or eat any of the candy before they get home so that you can inspect the goods and potentially control the amount eaten at one time.

Behind the Wheel

  • Watch for kids crossing the street.
  • Be careful entering or leaving driveways.
  • Eyes on the road.
