Every Day is a National "Something" Day

Written by Communications Team | Sun, Sep 15, 2019

Today’s blog idea started this morning when the price drop on avocados made news on Good Morning America.  Apparently, the price avocados fell over 50% - just in time for National Guacamole Day on Monday, September 16.  So, we started wondering just how many national “something” days there are.  The answer is a lot.  We cruised through our databases and came up with a representative selection for this week.

National Play-Doh Day

September 16 also is the day for that great child-pleasing toy.  Invented in the 1930’s as a wallpaper cleaner, Play-Doh is now in the National Toy Hall of Fame.  Hasbro has recognized the National Play-Doh Day since 2006.

Constitution Day

On September 17, 1787, the Constitution of the United States was signed by members of the U.S. Constitutional Convention.  Observing this holiday began in 1911 when school in Iowa first recognized the day.

Air Force Birthday

President Truman established the U.S. Air Force by signing the National Security Act on September 18, 1947.  He was on board the first Air Force One, a VC 54C at the time.

National Talk Like a Pirate Day

Since 2002, Talk Like a Pirate Day celebrates swashbuckling adventure on the high seas.  We’ve all seen Johnny Dep in those Pirates of the Caribbean movies and at some level wished we could be on his crew.  Here’s your chance on September 19.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day

A significant reminder of those people of the Armed Forces who remain missing in action or are prisoners of war, we have paused every year since 1989 when this day was created by presidential proclamation.  The Recognition Day is the third Friday in September. In 2019 the day is September 20.

The POW/MIA Flag is flown on this day over the Capitol, the White House, the Korean and Vietnam Veterans Memorials, the offices of the secretaries of State, Defense and Veterans Affairs, of the Selective Service System, and on the grounds or in the lobbies of every major military installation, every post office and all VA Medical Centers and national cemeteries.

International Day of Peace

The United Nations General Assembly has declared September 21 as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.  This year the theme – “Climate Action for Peace” - is a call for immediate action by all to lower greenhouse emissions, build resilience and improve education on climate change.
