Most major automakers are staking their futures on the idea that consumers will soon be ready to buy electricity stored in a battery pack. We thought now would be a good time to look at the trends in consumer opinions and the availability of electric cars this year.
Consumer Reports survey of American adults with a valid driver’s license conducted July – August of 2020 shows some interesting results.
4% “Definitely” plan to get an EV for their next vehicle
27% Will consider an EV for the next purchase
40% Have some interest in getting and EV is the future – not next purchase
29% Uninterested in ever getting an EV
The two biggest barriers cited in the survey are vehicle charging and the price of EVs. Additional barriers include:
More kinds of EVs. 71% of drivers agree that the variety of EV vehicle types should be larger.
Consumer-friendly EV charging rates. 68% of the responders indicate that electric utilities should offer discounts to charge EVs.
EV Purchase Rebates. 60% agree that incentives and tax rebates for plug-in EVs should be available to all consumers.
Invest in EV Infrastructure. 55% of drivers agree that their state should increase the availability of EV charging stations.
