Celebrating the End of 2020

Written by Communications Team | Mon, Dec 28, 2020

This year has been like no other. And New Year’s Eve is also going to be very unusual as well. We have been researching ideas for celebrating the end of 2020 and have some interesting ideas to share with you.

Times Square

At the ultimate New Year’s Eve celebration – Times Square – the ball will still drop, confetti will fall, and Alde Lang Syne will still play. The difference is Times Square will not be crowded with people.

A livestream of the event starts at 6 p.m. Eastern on timessquarenyc.org, or you can watch on most broadcast networks.

According to the organizers, the night’s festivities will recognize those Americans getting us through the pandemic — essential, frontline and emergency medical workers. Several of these workers will be the event’s official “Special Guests” — an honor bestowed each year on individuals representing “public service, resiliency and the human spirit.”

Celebrate the strength of Americans with United in Song: Celebrating the Resilience of Americans on Thursday, Dec.31 at 7:00PM Central on PBS.

Adding an International Flare

Want to add an international element to your celebration? Here are some locations around the world that you can view from home.

New Zealand at 5 a.m. Central, Wednesday, Dec. 30, with a fireworks display shooting from Auckland’s Sky Tower.

Seoul, South Korea, the Weverse entertainment app is streaming a 2021 New Year’s Eve Live concert with BTS, GFRIEND and other K-pop bands. The show starts at 6:30 a.m. Central, and ticket prices range from 48 to 72 Singapore dollars or about $36 to $54.

Rio de Janeiro on Copacabana beach at 9:00PM Central, see a midnight light show .

One more international event is on Friday, January 1, 2021 from Vienna a broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert, at 8 p.m. Central on PBS Great Performances.

Virtual Parties

How about some suggestions for partying from home? We found some good suggestions. Start with gathering on video.

Review 2020

In the 365 days of this year a lot can happen. Ask your guests to find one feel-good story to share with everyone.

Dance

Ask for a favorite song from each group member and turn them into a party playlist. You can even guess who suggested which song.

Resolutions

Ask everyone to start their list of New Year’s Resolutions. If they want support achieving those goals, they can share their list.

Game for All Ages

Using the words “Happy New Year” challenge guests to make a list of the words you can make using the letters in those three words? Have paper handy is a good idea for this game.

Can’t Stay Home?

If you are determined to go out this New Year’s Eve, please take a moment to review the recommendations about Social Distancing and Covid-19 from the City of Houston.

“Businesses and organizations in Houston have opened under modified protocols, following guidelines administered by local health officials, the State of Texas and CDC. At this time, guidance from experts urges people to continue wearing face masks when in public spaces, practice social distancing of at least six feet, limit your touching of surfaces and frequently use hand sanitizer or soap and water to keep your hands clean.”

“Before heading out, take time to familiarize with your destination’s requirements or restrictions at this moment, and be sure to contact them ahead of time with any questions or concerns.”
