A Tour of the Food on Our Tables

One thing the Corona-19 virus has created is that we are all focusing on food. It all started with wishing for meals from our favorite restaurants to deciding to make bread at home to having food delivered and finally going those restaurants again.

Our friends at AARP Magazine have provided a timeline of memorable food products and those amazing kitchen tools from 1934 to 2011. We found some favorites on that list and thought you would, too.

1934   Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup, the start of a billion casseroles

1953   Tater Tots, a crispy recycling of french fry leftovers by Ore-Ida

1956   Electric Can Opener to go with the Can Opener Cookbook

1958   Jiffy Pop, aluminum pie plate top-of-the-stove popcorn popper that                 expanded like the blob

1959   Tang, orange drink powder adapted by NASA and want-to-be an astronaut kids

1964   Electric Knife, great tool to power though roasts and turkeys

            Pop-Tarts, an offspring from research on making a moist dogfood patty

1965   Shake ’N Bake, fried chicken made easy, and we helped!

            SpaghettiOs, instant meal of spaghetti and meats balls in a can

1966   Cool Whip, frozen whipped topping that took desserts by storm

1971   Hamburger Helper, a packet of powders stretched a pound hamburger

            Crock-Pots, AM – put in cheap meat plus ingredients. PM- enjoy tasty dinner

1972   Celestial Seasonings, four hippies begin the herbal tea boom

1975   Famous Amos, the beginning of the gourmet cookie explosion

1976   California Cooler, a premixed sangria started a trend

1981   Lean Cuisine, low-cal frozen entrees sold out the first year

1989   Electric Juicer, must-have so you can drink those fruits and veggies

2006   Avocado Toast, beginning in a famed NYC café, this toast exploded

2010   Instant Pot, multi-cooker conquered the kitchen

2011   Meal Kits, take those decision out of dinner the HelloFresh and others.
