Asking the Vaccine Question

Written by Communications Team | Mon, Jul 26, 2021

As we’re getting out more asking that dreaded question about someone’s vaccination status can be tricky. It’s a fairly personal question and yet knowing the answer is important. We have some suggestions and ideas on addressing that issue.

Fair Topic

If you are with someone you haven’t seen in a while or maybe a new acquaintance, it would be unusual not to ask them. Remember, people can have strong feelings about vaccinations so diplomacy is important.

Ask the Host

Before you accept an invitation ask the host the masking and indoor/outdoor questions. Slipping these questions between “that sounds like a great party” and “looking forward to seeing you” will soften the impact.

Positioning the Question

Asking vaccination question is tricky. Reactions can range from a calm response to requesting a part of their private medical history or even seeing the whole debate as an ethical issue.

One suggestion includes divulging your vaccination status first. That casual statement opens the door for them to tell you if they are or aren’t.

Beginning with a phrase like “I hope you don’t mind me asking…” or “Please forgive me if I’m asking too personal a question…” can soften the question.

If the answer to your question isn’t what you’re hoping for you can suggest outdoor time together instead of abandoning that person as a reaction to their vaccination status.

If you are feeling bold, start with “I’m double-vaccinated. I’m telling you for your own good. You don’t know where I’ve been.”

One Note

Please refrain from attempting to debate or shame someone into getting vaccinated. You may be well-informed and fully vaccinated. Not everyone has access to the same information and resources that you do.
