A Day for Reminders

Written by Communications Team | Sun, Nov 01, 2020

With all of the distractions in our lives we thought today would be a good day to remind you of some up coming events on the calendar.

Daylight Saving Time

Today is the first Sunday in November and the day that we “fall back” to standard time. The brainchild of Ben Franklin, daylight saving time began in earnest during World War I and was enacted again during World War II.

In 2007, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 went into effect, expanding the length of daylight saving time to the present timing. Note: Officially the “saving” is singular in the phrase daylight saving time.

Reminder: Be sure all of your clocks are set back 1 hour today.

Election Day

With just three days until Election Day, pre-election voting has now surpassed two-thirds of all ballots cast during the 2016 presidential election.

More than 91.6 million Americans have voted so far, as a majority of states are reporting record early voting turnout in the 2020 election. The massive early voting numbers suggest a high level of enthusiasm for voting this year, despite the obstacles of a pandemic.

These votes represent about 43% of registered voters nationwide, according to a survey of election officials in all 50 states and Washington, DC, by CNN, Edison Research, and Catalist.   More than half of registered voters cast their ballots in early voting in 16 states.

Reminder: Vote on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.

Thanksgiving Turkey

Most of us haven’t made plans for Thanksgiving for this year - yet.

According to the National Turkey Federation, 88% of Americans say they will be eating Thanksgiving turkey. Last year, this equated to an expected 290 million Americans gathering to enjoy this yearly feast. For 2020, expect to see an increase of more than 400,000 turkey lovers.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending families who usually travel to see each other hold virtual Thanksgivings instead.  The agency recommends families skip traveling altogether and have smaller Thanksgiving dinners with people only living in the same household.

Reminder: If you are planning to roast that big bird for Thanksgiving the USDA recommends thawing that turkey in your refrigerator. Allow approximately 24 hours for each 4 to 5 pounds of turkey in a refrigerator set at 40°F or below.

53 Days Until Christmas

With some areas starting to see a resurgence of Covid-19 cases, and with the looming threat of the cold winter months sparking more coronavirus spread, many consumers will be staying at home and browsing the web for their holiday gifts this year.

Deloitte expects holiday e-commerce sales to surge by 25% to 35%, amounting to between $182 billion and $196 billion, compared with year-over-year growth online of 14.7% in 2019, when sales amounted to $145 billion.

Reminder: Start your shopping early, consider online purchasing, and stay safe.
