The 2021 Academy Awards Ceremony is tonight. We thought you might be interested in some very unusual facts about this year’s show. This is a record-breaking year for racial diversity in general at the Oscars, with nine ethnic minority actors nominated out of 20 available slots.
The past 16 months of Covid have been truly unusual times for movies and movie theaters. Ticket sales fell in U.S. cinemas by 80% to $2.8 billion and domestic box office dollars failed to go above $100 million each month.

Cost of a 30-second commercial during the telecast is $2 million – 64% less that the Super Bowl.

On the Unusual List
Chadwick Boseman’s posthumous nomination for Best Actor is only the 8th in 93 years. James Dean, Jeanne Eagels, Ralph Richardson, Massimo Troisi and Spencer Tracy were also nominated after their deaths (twice, in Dean's case), while Heath Ledger and Peter Finch are the only two actors to have won.
Golden Globe winner for best supporting actress has received an Oscar nomination since 1976. That changed this year. Jodie Foster won the Globe for her performance in The Mauritanian, but she isn't even one of the five nominees at the Oscars.
All 5 nominees for best original screenplay are up for best picture for the first time in Oscar history. They are: Minari, Promising Young Woman, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Sound of Metal.
The winners in each of the acting categories could be from ethnic minority groups. The Screen Actor Guild is seen as a big Oscars indicator the winners were Yuh-Jung Youn, Daniel Kaluuya, Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman.
First year for two female nominees for best director. Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) are up for best director.
Furthermore, Zhao and Fennell are also up for best adapted screenplay and best original screenplay respectively. If they both win, it will mark the first time in Oscars history that women have won both the screenwriting categories.
