Best Practices Agencies are selected every three years through a comprehensive nomination and qualification process. To qualify, firms must be nominated by an insurance company or an IIABA state association and must then submit detailed financial and operational information which is analyzed, scored, and ranked objectively for inclusion in the study on the basis of client retention and services, employee productivity, financial results and overall management achievement. More than 900 independent insurance agencies and brokers of varying sizes across the U.S. were nominated to take part in the selection process, but only 195 agencies – the top 30 in each of six revenue groups and 15 in a seventh category for mega-sized agencies – qualified for inclusion in the study and earned the designation of Best Practices Agency. Increased 401(k) Contribution Limits

Current Law
Employees are currently limited to a maximum of $10,500 (for the 2001 calendar year) in employee pre-tax elective deferrals under 401(k) plans

New Law Effective 2002
The maximum elective deferral will eventually increase to $15,000 as follows:

2006	$15,000

After 2006, the maximum deferral amount is indexed in $500 increments.

Loans for "Owner-Employees"

Current Law
Loans are not available for "owner-employees". An "owner-employee" is a self-employed individual, a partner with a 10% or more ownership interest in the partnership, or a 5% or more shareholder of a Subchapter S corporation.

Loans are available to "owner-employees", effective for plan loans made after December 31, 2001.

A Cafeteria Plan is a plan designed exclusively for the employee, and that allows them to enroll for non-taxable benefits. The employee elects to direct a portion of his or her salary into the Plan to be used to pay for his or her expenses. This reduces the employees' taxable income. It benefits the employer as well, by reducing employer FICA and it increases employee morale because it shows employer concern.

In a perfect world, there would be no workplace injuries, leaving employers with one less major concern. However, since our world is not perfect, we are happy to begin our Risk Management services with a need assessment. Based on the assessment, we will provide an action plan to create and maintain a safe work environment. Should there be an incident, we will also offer follow-up services. The end result of these efforts is reduced claim costs and lost work time, lower training/retraining costs, and ultimately increased productivity.
